Violins & Bows

Local places to buy violins and bows: Hillside Music specializes in student models; John Osnes Violins and Petr's Violin Shop carry more high-end models.

Smaller size instruments for children can be bought or rented locally at Hillside Music and Petr's Violin Shop.

I like the entry-level Bucci bow sold at Petr's Violin Shop as a basic no-frills but plenty good enough bow.

Beware of buying cheap fiddles over the internet! Sometimes you may get a great deal, but often you will waste your money on something that is really unplayable, and if you're looking here for advice you probably dont know what things to look for to tell the difference.

Out of state, I recommend Lasley & Russ Violins in Seattle: I bought both my current instruments there, Duane & Chris were wonderful to work with and had a nice bunch of fiddles to pick from.

Please contact me for more specific advice about violins.

Whistles

For whistles, locally they can be bought sometimes from me, at Suzi's Woollies, Celtic Treasures, or any music store. If you're looking to upgrade, hang out at the Chiff & Fipple, look through Dale's list of recommended merchants, and read the threads on advice for purchasing whistles. I sell starter instruments; when it comes to whistles, some great players never bother upgrading past the $10 variety, and some players will pay hundreds for your basic soprano D.
